LOWVELO / [ low·vel·oh ] / Noun. A combination of the words Lowcountry and velo, the French word for “bike.” A cycling event that brings a dedicated group of riders, volunteers, virtual participants, sponsors and staff members together to raise funds for innovative and lifesaving cancer research at the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center: MUSC Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston. “Thunderstorms were expected to move 25 mph Southeast across Beaufort, Berkeley, Effingham, Jasper, Colleton and Charleston counties, according to a special weather statement from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston. Experts warned of wind gusts of up to 55 mph that could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Impacts could include damage to roofs, siding and trees, according to the weather statement. “Continuous” cloud-to-ground-lightning is also occurring, according to NWS. People should “seek selter inside a well-built structure and stay away from windows,” the NWS warned. “Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are clsoe enough to be struck by lightning.”
